Comprising violinists Sarah Ma and Max Ball, violist Jasper de Boor, and cellist Drew Dansby, the quartet is known for its interdisciplinary approach and commitment to diverse programming. Their performances are characterized by a rich, cohesive sound and a deep emotional resonance, earning them praise such as “an ensemble to watch” (Hyde Park Herald) and commendations for their “extraordinary, honeyed group sound” (Cleveland Classical).

In 2024, Poiesis joined the Concert Artists Guild roster after winning the Louis & Susan Meisel Competition, positioning them among the most promising chamber groups in North America. Currently, they serve as the Graduate String Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, studying under the Ariel Quartet. They also hold an ensemble-in-residence position with concert:nova, a Cincinnati-based collective known for interdisciplinary performances.

POEISIS QUARTET

As part of the North Carolina Museum of Art’s popular Sights & Sounds on Sundays series, the Poiesis Quartet promises an afternoon of innovative and emotionally stirring chamber music. Their program will feature both classical masterpieces and contemporary works, reflecting their dedication to expanding the traditional quartet repertoire. This is a performance not to be missed by chamber music enthusiasts and newcomers alike.

The Poiesis Quartet is rapidly emerging as one of the most compelling young ensembles in chamber music today. Founded in 2022 at Oberlin Conservatory, this dynamic group has already garnered significant acclaim, including the 2023 Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, along with the Senior Strings Gold Medal and the Lift Every Voice prize for outstanding performance of a work by a historically underrepresented composer. They also clinched the Gold Medal and BIPOC Prize at the 2023 St. Paul String Quartet Competition.
